Data governance is the set of policies, roles, and processes that determine how data is managed across an organization — who owns a dataset, who can access it, how it’s classified, and how changes are tracked.

Typical concerns it covers:

Ownership — a clear accountable owner per dataset or domain
Access control — who can read/write, and how that’s audited
Classification — tagging data by sensitivity (PII, confidential, public)
Lineage — tracing where data came from and what transformed it
